As the global push for carbon neutrality intensifies, the European Union introduced the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) to ensure imported goods are subject to the same carbon pricing as those produced within the EU. In response, Essex Chambers of Commerce has launched a dedicated CBAM Consultancy Service and a free EU CBAM Health Check Tool to support UK exporters in understanding and complying with this complex regulatory landscape.
CBAM is the EU regulation that aims to reduce carbon leakage by levelling the playing field for EU and non-EU producers of carbon-intensive goods. Initially covering products such as cement, iron and steel, aluminium, fertilisers, electricity, and hydrogen, it requires EU importers to report on the embedded greenhouse gas emissions of these goods.
From 1st July 2024, EU importers had to begin using actual emissions data rather than default values when reporting to the European Commission. This shift places an increasing burden on UK exporters to provide detailed emissions data, covering both direct and indirect emissions, for their goods. Without this information, EU importers may face higher CBAM costs, making UK exports less competitive.
Our new CBAM Consultancy Service provides bespoke support to help businesses:
The service is delivered by experienced consultants and is available on-site or remotely, offering a tailored approach to suit each business’s needs.
To assist businesses in evaluating their readiness for CBAM compliance, we offer a free, interactive EU CBAM Health Check Tool. This tool allows UK exporters to:
If further support is needed, businesses can book a free session with an expert.
This consultancy service and health check tool not only help businesses meet immediate EU requirements but also prepare them for the UK’s own CBAM legislation, expected to come into force by 2027. By acting early, UK exporters can maintain strong relationships with EU clients and future-proof their operations against evolving carbon compliance regimes.
